Alice Marie Putnam, age 98, a resident at Arbor Oaks Assisted Living Facility peacefully passed away on April 17th.Alice was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. in 1916.She lost both of her parents at an early age and was raised by her beloved aunt and uncle in Ebensburg, Pa.She graduated cum laude from Wilson College and was a flutist in the college orchestra.She was in the first graduating class of the "WAVES". While in the Navy as a first lieutenant, she met and married the love of her live, Travers, who was a naval pilot.She was blessed to have a daughter and a son.After living for a short time in Gainesville, Fl the family set up permanent residence in St. Petersburg in 1960.Alice was active in the St. Petersburg League of Women Voters, the Reading Is Fundamental program and worked tirelessly for environmental causes. With the support and advice of a writing group for freelance writers she helped form, she successfully wrote many articles published in newspapers and magazines.She especially enjoyed writing for children and published six children books.One of the books was runner-up for the Newberry Award for children's literature. She is survived by her daughter, Gretchen Putnam Horst (Bill), Reston, Va.; her son Dan Putnam (Mary), Seminole, Fl.; a grandson, Jeff Poole, Salt Lake City, Utah; a great granddaughter, Isis, and great grandson, Orion, both from Salt Lake City, Utah.A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Largo on May 1st at 11:00 a.m.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Wildlife Federation.
