Obituary

Daniel Bailey Mayer, D.O. ("Dr. Dan"), passed away at his home in North Tampa on Wednesday, July 4, surrounded by Carole Mayer, his wife of fifty five years, his children, and grandchildren.Daniel was born to Orma (Bailey) and George Arthur Mayer on May 5, 1921, in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Utica-Washington High School in Utica, OH in 1939. He graduated from Cincinnati Bible Seminary with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology in 1945, and accepted his first pastorate in Sabina, Ohio. In 1948, he became the senior pastor at First Christian Church in Martins Ferry, Ohio. During this time, he also began pre-med studies in West Virginia, ultimately graduating from Milligan College in 1953. In 1956, he founded and became the senior pastor of the Upper Arlington Christian Church in Columbus, Ohio. He moved to Tampa, Florida in 1964 to establish a Chaplain program at Good Samaritan Hospital (currently known as Florida Hospital). In the same year, he became the first minister of Northwest Christian Church. At the age of forty-two, he entered Des Moines College of Osteopathic Medicine, and finished with a medical degree with a Special Pediatric Certificate in 1968. Dan returned to Tampa as a staff physician for Good Samaritan Hospital. In 1972, he opened Lakeside Medical Center in Land O'Lakes, FL, maintaining a practice until 1998, when he became the Medical Director of The Medical Center of Nutritional and Preventive Medicine in St. Petersburg, FL, until he retired in 2008. He is survived by his first wife, Etta Mae Love (Morgan), their sons Timothy Mayer (Debra Farr), David Mayer (Vivian England), four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all from Eastern Tennessee. In Tampa, he is survived by Carole Starrett Mayer and their children, Martha Crane (Thomas), Mark Mayer, DO, (Luisa Guzman), Mary Parsons (Gary), Matthew Mayer (Rachel Covarrubias), Michele Sherbet (Clint), Amy Howard (James) of LaBelle, FL. He is survived by twenty-nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brothers David Peter Mayer, Richard Burrell Mayer, DO, of Monticello KY, George Arthur Mayer, Jr. of Tampa, his sister, Orma JoAnne Ice. Dan was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ with a heart for medical missions. His love of family, history, and the arts, along with his lifelong study of Scripture, made him an outstanding Bible teacher. His life and teaching influenced countless people wherever he lived. A funeral service will be held at 10:45 AM on Monday, July 9, at Tampa Covenant Church, located at 13320 Lake Magdalene Blvd., Tampa, FL 33618, with a public visitation starting at 10:00 AM.
