Fr. John H. Kaack passed away peacefully at his home on January 6 (the Feast of the Epiphany). He is survived by his three sisters Edna, Rita, and Beth. He was born in New Haven, CT on November 30, 1944 and raised in Baton Rouge, LA. Ever since he was a little boy, John always wanted to become a priest, and in 1963 he entered the Society of Jesus to begin his studies as a Jesuit. Throughout his career, he taught English & Latin for a total of 46 years at Jesuit High School of Tampa (where he also served as Chaplain and director of the drama club), Jesuit High School of New Orleans (where he served as Principal), and Jefferson High School of Tampa. He also performed pastoral/ministry work at St. Lawrence Catholic Parish of Tampa. While committed to his beliefs, he was loved by his students at all three high schools where he served as a dedicated and distinguished teacher, friend, spiritual advisor, vociferous football fan, and cheerleader for every cause he pursued. An extraordinary and gifted homilist, Fr. Kaack always followed the path he believed to be right and just, while not permitting any word of his to be without effect. He was truly a favorite go-to baptism, wedding, and funeral officiant for his parishioners and student family. He would never shy away from an invite to a class reunion or a home-cooked meal. Kaack (as he was known by many) is also survived by thousands of students at Jesuit and Jefferson whom he inspired, and by the many St. Lawrence parishioners who enjoyed his heartfelt sermons. A funeral mass will be Celebrated Thursday, January 18, 2018, at 6:00 PM at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, with a reception afterwards.
