Felipe de Jesus Yanes, 91, passed away at his Tampa home on February 15 surrounded by his children and Lifepath Hospice nurse Philomene. The son of Ramon Antonio Yanes and Maria Angelina Martinez, He was born in Ranchuelo, Cuba on December 22, 1925 and was preceded in death by his wife, our beloved mother, Juanita Yanes, and by his sister, Carmen Yanes. He is survived by his four children Felipe (Pam), Laura (Scott), Diana and Ramon "Monchi" as well as his two grandchildren Joseph and Emily and his consuegra Helen Gaudet. Dad attended the University of Havana where he obtained a degree in Business Administration and worked as an accountant at insurance companies and banks in Havana and Santa Clara for 15 years and, later, for 31 years as a controller in various industries in Tampa. Dad was an avid computer programmer, developed his own customized accounting software and enjoyed teaching his grandson the finer points of programming logic. In a fated-to-be encounter, he met our mother in 1939 in Cienfuegos while taking classes from her aunt so that he could skip the seventh grade. Little did he know then that the 12-year old girl visiting that summer from Philadelphia would become his wife 11 years later. Over a period of 75 years, their friendship, love and mutual respect was a shining example of the ideal marriage. Their compatibility was especially evident on the dance floor, whether it was at the Villaclara Tennis Club in Santa Clara or later at the Cuban Social Club in Tampa. As they got older, they were content to stay home on Saturday nights, watching Lawrence Welk and enjoying a meal of salad, paella and key lime pie. From our grandfather he learned woodworking and spent many hours working on his Shopsmith with his son Monchi. He had a Spanish saying for all of life's circumstances. When Monchi would make Bustelo for himself and mother, the aroma would wake Dad from his nap at the opportune moment and, as he entered the family room, would always say "Mejor a tiempo que invitado": better on time than invited. A third cup would, of course, be added. We will always be grateful for his devotion to family, work ethic, intelligence, integrity, courage, decency, sense of humor and kindness to others and especially to animals. Respecting his wishes, we will not have a public service for him. Until we are reunited, good bye Dad. We love you so very much. Give Mom a hug and a kiss for us.
