Obituary

George Allen Mills, born 1924 in Covington, Kentucky moved to Tampa, Florida in 1931, passed away November 7, 2019 at the age of 95. He graduated fromH. B. Plant high school and attended the University of Miami before service in the United States Navy during World War II. He served aboard the USS Eberle when it was assigned duties in Alaskan waters,retired as LTJG. After the war, George graduated the from the University of Tampa where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. George owned Gasparilla Transfer and Storage in Tampa. After retiring he enjoyed many years as a substitute teacher at Coleman MS. George was a founding member of Saint Mary's Episcopal Church and served in different capacities from Sunday School teacher to Senior Warden. He was a member of the governing board of the Tampa Philharmonic Orchestra, the predecessor to the The Florida Orchestra. A long- time member and past President of Palma Ceia Country Club, he loved the game of golf, traveling to many golf courses with his Palma Ceia golfing friends. George will be remembered for his humor, thoughtfulness, kindness, love of Opera and as a man of integrity, conviction and patriotism, he was always focused on the greatest and overall common good and accepted people based on their merit. He is predeceased by his older brother Milburn Verner Mills, sister Kathleen Elizabeth (Gibson) Lamb, his first wife Lucille (Gramling) his second wife Voncile (Hires), his daughter Susan Mills. He is survived by his daughter, Kay Mills Patterson (Bob ), brother James T. Mills (Nomita) of Savannah, GA, his stepson Tom Hires (Cia ) of Apollo Beach and his stepdaughter Kim Hires Jensen of Madison, GA, Grandchildren Chase Patterson, Lindsey Patterson Bates, Tommy Hires, Catherine Hires, William Long, Erin Claypool, Tyler Jensen, Tanner Jensen.. Nieces and nephews Kay EllenNicholas of Charlotte, NC, Tom Mills of Kingsport, TN, Captain James A. Gibson, USN Ret (Fran ), Helen Mills (Susan) of Savannah, GA, Betsy Levitas (Steve) of Raleigh, NC, James Mills (Isobel )of Atlanta Mary Ann Clay (Jason) of Arlington, VA. Services will be conducted at St. Mary's Episcopal Church 4311 W. San Miguel on November 19, 2019 at 11:00 AM with reception to follow at Palma Ceia Country Club.
