IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James K.
Wilson
November 18, 1938 – January 26, 2024
James K. Wilson has finished his earthly journey. He lived with unparalleled enthusiasm and vigor. There was nothing that he could not design, build, lead, or organize. James embraced the belief that life was meant to be lived, tasted, and experienced. He lived life eagerly without fear and sought out new and enriching experiences. On Thursday, January 25th, James, aged 85 departed this life, leaving behind a legacy of boundless creativity, unwavering dedication, and energy.
James had an unlimited creative spirit. He delighted in making jewelry for the Strawberry Festival. He could infuse art into everyday whether that was building decks or sharing homemade wine with friends. He had an incredible knack for figuring anything out mechanically and being resourceful. He knew how to turn a simple gathering into a joyful celebration. He was clever and quick-witted. His laughter was hearty and genuine.
One of his greatest joys was found nestled in the serene mountains of North Georgia in Blairsville, where he had a home. He created many memories of hosting friends, rambling around the mountain communities, going to auctions, or tilling the soil with his treasured tractor. He loved sitting on his porch and watching the change of seasons with his beloved wife Ellen and their faithful dogs. His life had been filled with lovable dogs. He would have agreed that dogs weren't his whole life, but his precious dogs made his life whole.
Born on November 18, 1938, in Cairo, GA, James embarked on a journey through life that was extraordinary. He graduated from Cairo High School in 1956. After High School, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served his country. In 1960, he took a job as a store manager for Star Super Markets in Tampa, FL. In 1963, he dedicated himself to working with the Hillsborough County Tax Collector Department. He retained this position for 30 years serving as a branch manager. He served his community far beyond his office. He played a pivotal role in organizing the reserve unit of the Sherriff's Office, retiring from there in 1991 as a Captain.
His numerous contributions to the community included serving as a Master Mason Life Member, Scottish Rite Life Member, and holding the esteemed title of 32nd degree Egypt Shrine member. He was also the Past President of the Egypt Shrine Honor Patrol, Past President of the Plant City Kiwanis Club, and Distinguished Lt. Governor of Kiwanis for Hillsborough County in 1982-83. As a past president of the North Forest Hills Neighborhood Association and chairman of the neighborhood watch program, he made an indelible impact on the community he called home. He was a Proud Marine Corps League Life member, James rose through the ranks, culminating in his role as Commandant of the Angus R. Goss Detachment #56 in Tampa, FL. His commitment to service and leadership was unwavering, leaving an enduring mark on all who had the privilege of serving alongside him.
James was preceded in death by his father and mother, Floyd and Ina Wilson; his two brothers Lee Wilson and Earl Wilson; and his adored wife, Ellen Oliver Wilson. He also leaves behind 3 sisters; Sadie Voyles, of Cairo, GA; Elaine Sasser of Thomasville, GA; and Kay King and her husband Bruce of Sneads, FL and a host of nieces and nephews.
