John Lewis
Sligh
Sep 16, 1951 — Jul 1, 2026
Saturday
St. Clement’s Episcopal Church
Starts at 11:00 am (Eastern time)
The Reverend John Lewis Sligh died peacefully in the early hours of July 1, 2026, after a brief period under hospice care. He was surrounded by love, prayer, and the sure hope of the resurrection. He was 74.
Born in Washington, D.C., to John Hilary and Norma Eloise Sligh, Lewis spent his early childhood in Washington and San Antonio before the family settled in Forest Park, Georgia, following his father’s retirement from the United States Air Force.
He graduated from Forest Park High School in 1969 before studying flute at the Juilliard School in New York. Later transferring to the University of Georgia, he completed a degree in music and philosophy before discerning a call to ordained ministry.
After receiving his Master of Divinity from Nashotah House Seminary in Wisconsin, Lewis served Episcopal parishes in Colorado and Florida. Yet music never ceased to be part of his life. It remained an expression of the same vocation that had led him to the Church.
Returning to professional performance, Lewis won the piccolo position with The Florida Orchestra in 1996 after years of perseverance, freelancing, and countless auditions. He also performed for many summers with the Britt Festival Orchestra in Oregon.
Following his retirement from The Florida Orchestra, Lewis became part of the ministry team at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church in Tampa, where he served as Music Director, working closely with the choir, handbell choir, and organist. During the COVID-19 pandemic he and Fr. Andrew Heyes produced weekly online Bible studies and reflections, continuing to teach, encourage, and bring hope during a difficult season.
Declining health gradually limited his strength, but his warmth, wit, gentle humor, deep faith, and enduring love of music never left him.
Lewis leaves behind his beloved sister, Kathy, close friend and colleague Andrew, many dear friends, colleagues, parishioners, and fellow musicians whose lives were enriched by his friendship, ministry, and music.
His Funeral Eucharist will be celebrated at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, Tampa, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, and will be livestreamed.
Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon him.
