Obituary

Mr.Joseph John Donaghy, of Lutz, died on Friday, September 8, 2006. He was born in County Armaugh, Ireland on April 30, 1922 and moved to the Tampa area with his wife Eileen and family in 1950 from Kansas City, Missouri. He was a printer and worked for the Tampa Tribune until his retirement. Joe was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church, doing service work there and delivering food through the Meals-on-Wheels organization. He graduated high school in New York City and joined the United States Coast Guard, assigned to a Destroyer Escort during World War II, helping to save the lives of sailors on a torpedoed ship next to his, by swimming many hours in the Mediterranean Sea. He was a dedicated father who always provided for his family, putting in long hours to ensure their needs were met. He was preceded in death by his wife Eileen of 61 years, his daughter, Mary McCarthy, infant children, Ann Patricia Donaghy and James Gregory Donaghy, and his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Renshaw Donaghy. Joe is survived by his children, Joe Donaghy & wife Sandy of Cary, N.C., Bob Donaghy & wife Ethel of Lutz, FL, Maggie Bailey & her husband, Rob, of Woodstock, IL and John Donaghy of Chicago, IL; son-in-law, Liam McCarthy of Colorado; and eighteen grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 AM Friday, September 15, 2006 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 821 S. Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa. Private inurnment will follow with full military honors at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions in his memory to the American Heart Association.
