Joshua was born on January 7, 1983, in Springfield, Massachusetts to Justin and Esther Hsu of Enfield, Connecticut. He was the youngest of four children and was often affectionately called "little boy."
The family moved to Toledo, Ohio, in 1985 due to his father's new job with Toledo Edison. He attended Central Elementary School in Sylvania township from Kindergarten to Grade 2.
In 1990 the family made another move to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he finished elementary school at Pioneer, middle school at Timberview, and high school at Liberty. He excelled in swimming, becoming one of the best in the state, as well as competing in football, track and field. He dabbled with piano, trumpet, and band.
Josh was began his undergraduate studies in 2001 at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. His graduation was delayed by a year when he was severely injured in a rugby game on October 9, 2004 - on his mother's 50th birthday. He returned to Colorado Springs after 3 months of rehabilitation. He completed his required courses at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and graduated from Tufts with a degree in International Relations in 2006.
Josh worked with several companies over the years in Colorado Springs and Denver. In 2015 he went to England and enrolled in a master's program in cyber security. He returned to the United States where he began his cyber security career with the University of Colorado, Comcast, and various other companies. In 2020 he moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, so he could be close to his sister, Justina, and her family. He was hoping to be able to go into work in Boston but COVID derailed his plans. In 2022 he made another move to Tampa, Florida, to escape the winter weather of New England.
Josh loved to travel, meet new people, and share meals with his friends and family. He had various interests including snowboarding, motorcycles, hunting, and camping. He attended the Radiant Church and was involved with small group and youth ministry. At the time of his death, he was working for the University of California, Irvine.
Joshua was predeceased by his father Justin. He is survived by his mother Esther, his siblings Elias (Gwang Yi), Eliot (Jina) and Justina (Chad) Hillen and 5 nephews and nieces - Makenzie, Madelyn, Mason Hillen and Declan and Jasper Hsu.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Joshua on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11:00 am, at Front Range Alliance Church, 5210 Centennial Boulevard, Colorado Springs, CO.
