Robert Lee Holley, affectionately known to his friends as Captain Holley or Bob, was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He passed away on March 12, 2022 at the age of 95 in Tampa, Florida. He was born in Quanah, Texas in 1927. He is survived by 2 daughters Sylvia Bray (husband Ron) and Shirley Hernandez (husband Gary); 3 grandchildren (Monica Bray, Kirby Bray and Alex Bray) and a great-grandson (Christopher Siedhoff) with a great-granddaughter arriving in May and another great-grandson arriving in June. He is predeceased by his wife (Hiroko Holley), parents and 2 brothers. Robert grew up during the Great Depression and migrated with his parents, brothers, grandparents and other relatives from Texas to California by car caravan, staying in migrant camps along the way. His parents became successful farmers in California. In 1945 at the age of 18, Robert was drafted into the Army during WWII. He was sent to Tokyo, Japan as part of the Occupation and Reconstruction Military Units. He stayed in Japan for 10 years working as an Army Civilian and met his wife, Hiroko, there. They were married for 69 years until her death last year.
Robert was a Tampa Police officer for 28 years and retired as a captain. He was also an active member and a board member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #27 for many years. He loved horseback riding, animals (especially birds and dogs), playing golf, going on picnics, watching his favorite game shows and Westerns, working crossword puzzles and especially playing the card game Cribbage. He loved his family dearly and was a kind and giving friend to those that knew him.
Robert's service will be held on Tuesday, March 22 at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. Please arrive by 12:15pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert's memory may be given to the American Heart Association atwww.heart.org.
