Mr. Robert Johnson Payne, 86, of Temple Terrace, departed this life on July 3, 2016. He was born at Tampa General Hospital in 1930 and married Joyce Bailey in 1960. He is survived by his two daughters, Polly Payne, husband Mike Pepper, and Robin White, husband Jeff White, as well as his three grandsons, Miles Reed, Logan White, and Hunter White. He was preceded in death by his father, Davis Payne, and his mother, Ethel Payne as well as his brother William. He is survived by his sister Margaret Borders and numerous nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Jefferson High School; winning the Guy Toph Award in 1947 for excellence in football for Hillsborough County. After serving four years in the U.S. Army, he worked for the railroad and retired after many years in the elevator industry.
He was a member of the Temple Terrace Church of Christ and his family wishes to thank their church family for the many prayers, cards, calls, meals, and visits during his illness.
He fought a valiant battle against Merkel Cell Carcinoma, a rare and aggressive skin cancer. He and his family encourage everyone to wear sunscreen and get regular check-ups with a dermatologist.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Florida College Adopt-A-Student Program,c/o Florida College,119 N. Glen Arven Avenue, Temple Terrace, FL 33617.
