The Rev. John Holland McTyre (b. November 6, 1919) passed away March 15, 2014, in Syracuse, New York. A native of Savannah, Georgia, he has lived with his wife Maurine E. Robles in Syracuse, New York for 12 years. John earned a certificate in business administration from Middle Georgia College, a B.A. from Mercer University, and the Bachelor of Divinity degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. John worked as manager of Wholesale Grocery Company in Fitzgerald, Georgia, and served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943-1945 before attending seminary. In 1945, he married his wife, Maurine Eunice Robles. An ordained Baptist minister, he then served as pastor of several Baptist churches in Georgia.
In 1957, John and his wife, Maurine were appointed as Southern Baptist foreign missionaries and served for 27 years in Santiago, Chile. John pastored local Baptist churches and also served as the mission's business manager from 1959 to 1970. In addition, he served as mission treasurer from 1959 to 1975, treasurer for several boards of the Chile Baptist Convention, and as auditor of Southern Baptist missions throughout Latin America.
In 1985, John and Maurine retired to Tampa, Florida and later moved to Syracuse to live near their children.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Maurine Robles McTyre; his son, J. Andrew McTyre (Sarah); his daughter, Maurine Elizabeth McTyre-Watts (Jim Watts), and his granddaughter, C. Lyn Watts. John was predeceased by his oldest daughter, Janelyn Robles McTyre, in 2011.
Calling hours will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 28 at MacDonald Funeral Home, 10520 N Florida Ave, Tampa.A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 29 at 11 a.m. at Mount Zion Cemetery, Dade City, FL.
